A Rightfully Remarkable Camera !!!
Canon has done it again with another decidedly remarkable camera. The XLH1 and XLH1a are by far the best camera's in this price range.
Actually this camera is heartier than most that cost 3 or 4 times as much.
Great picture quality, very nicely laid out controls, wild auto focus, very clever image stabilizer and a enormous amount of flexibility.
I have been a Canon fan and user for 20 years and have never been discontented. The Canon XLH1 is a work of art and a thing of beauty.
Sure this camera is not for the novice because it can be quite complex to get set up to take the way you want it to but once you do go through the tedious tasks of adjusting it to your own tastes then you have the most wonderful video camera quickly at your finger tips to do what ever you want it to do.
You can set the camera to auto everything and get pretty good HD video but I put you learn how to adjust it to do more of what it was made to do and that is capture absolutely stunning video.

Canon HDV
The XL H1 is a renowned camera, used with outstanding results by videographers around the world. If you have the budget and need the professional features not found on the XH A1, this camera is a mammoth choice.
Just in response to the review below, this camcorder records conventional HDV 60i, the identical constitution to that found on any Sony, JVC, or Panasonic camcorder. This footage can be played on any camera or deck supporting HDV.
The reviewer refers to 24F and 30F, which are Further formats Canon has developed for their XL and XH series camcorders. 24F in particular is an amazing format, allowing Canon to demand a true 24p framerate at a fraction of the cost of other codecs.
If you wanted to use the 24F or 30F formats, and needed to whisk on more than one camera, the other camera could shoot on conventional 24p and be edited in the same timeline within Final Cut. But you may as well stick with Canon, as I do and as does Patrick Moreau of Still Movability. Highly recommended.

Not in agreement with standard HDV
Fair camera, no doubt about it. BUT you may consider that if you shoot in 24F or 30F mode, the tapes can only be played back in the camera itself. 24F and 30F modes minutes the signal in a Canon's proprietary way, and cannot be red in ANY deck or camera available in the market today. You can not shoot and produce the tapes to any editing facility.
I couldn't believe this, until I called to Canon technical support forefront, and the technician confirmed that to me.

Magic. Wonderful. Great!
I pleasure this camera. If you don't have a lot of experience with prosumer cameras (as in my case), the first look may be a bit intimidating (a friend said, "It looks like you're filming tv talk"). Especially as I added a Rode shotgun mike (not sure it does anything other than dote on the sound louder, but...still checking it out).
You can't rest the camera on your shoulder, but the image stabilizer helps and the suzerainty and buttons are all well designed and easy to reach. I struggled through the manual, but fortunately bought Dan Curran's dvd about the xh-a1 which appears to be almost like. This was a -huge- help. I can't recommend it enough if you are at all unsure of what you're looking at. He goes through the simplest things (putting the snub strap on) to some very technical settings that you can do. The dvd saved me -so much- learning time and also prevented some careless mistakes (like letting sunlight through the viewfinder).
This camera feels like a terrific ornament that can do whatever you need and the picture quality--even on Auto--is beautiful. Having the two XLR terminals will make a big dissimilarity, too. The versatility and design really meets such a variety of needs--way too much machine/expense for "tranquil video" (it's not the kind of camera people forget is pointing at them), but great if you want to toss training films, web videos, independent films.
Technology has changed so much in the 20 years since I was in pic school--and it's still hard for me to believe that such a great camera, capable of such a quality product, is handy for under $4000.
Very impressed. Highly recommended.

Lofty!
I weakness this camcorder. I'm not particularly tech-savvy or a 'pro' (working on it) but after reading through the manual I am now able to do extremely much everything I want. The quality of the image is great, as is the price when you compare it to other HD camcorders available. It arrived in the end fast too.

Skilful Cam for Pros and Novices
This Canon cam has been a excess investment to my company. It was easy to learn, fast to set up, and a pleasure to use; even when all the settings are on manual. All of the top-level controls are programmable hard buttons. Focus, Aperture, and zoom are all on the lens tub for easy access. The picture is clear and the computer interface to the camera is a breeze. This is a real title-holder.

Sweet It !!! Love IT !!! Love It !!!
This camera is not for the greenhorn by any means because once you step out of the auto everything mode it can be quite complicated.
Now that being said if it wasn't for all the handbook settings and adjustments I would not want it anyway.
I have a Canon XLH1 and this camera makes the perfect workmate for it.
The picture characteristic is virtually the same so for a two camera shoot it's great.
Although it's about half of the weight of it's big brother the XLH1 it's still a little industriously to hold steady since you can't rest it on your shoulder but the image stabilization is very helpful.
Also the auto converge is very fast and really comes in handy when you have to run and gun so to speak.
All in all this is a great camera with a awesome essence and I simply love it.

Canon XH-A1S 3CCD HDV Acme Definition Professional Camcorder with 20x HD Video Zoom Lens III
What can I say except this camera is the only one that offers everything you need in this expenditure range. What really sets it apart is the two xlr inputs on the side allowing two microphones to capture investigate, and it switchable between external and internal mics, or use both simultaneously. No other camera offers this. Get a lens screen kit and the wide angle and telephoto adapters and you're ready to create anything you can imagine.
I recently filmed a music red-letter day using this camera for long shots, close-ups, cutaways, and static shots, everything looks astonishing. A tip for the novice to high-def recording- keeping the lens clean and checking it frequently is a must. The tiniest whit of dust looks huge on playback.
I've used it mostly on automatic setting so far as the the music commemoration was happening only days after receiving this camera but the little bit I've played around on manual setting promises unique versatility, i'm very excited.

Accomplished for HV40
Concerning camera noise--there is no mechanical noise from my HV40 and therefore not an issue here. Of the three settings: The shotgun mic setting is serviceable in toning down ambient sound. For example, I recently shot a soccer player alone on an energetic field as he juggled, shot on goal and so on. In such a wide-open space there's a lot of sound bouncing around that we don't mind, but which is distracting later on the audio. The shotgun setting captures the sound of your subject, not the busses successful by a block away or jets overhead. It's also very good shooting from grandstands during games, and picks up the shouts of players and refs. The Stero One frame makes a slight improvement on the internal stereo mics, somewhat better understandability, to my ear at least. Stereo Two I haven't noticed much difference. The DM-50 is small and nicely in proportion to the HV40. I about it's best use is as a simple substitute for body mics, or for noisy environments. A better audio footpath when editing video is a joy--something you might not have known you were missing but you won't want to give up once you have it. AS you may have noticed, it is often difficult if not impossible to shift unwanted background sound from an audio track. Prevention is the medicine.

SOOO Sick to one's stomach !!!!
In my theory this is a necessary addition to the canon HV series. I've used it in extremely noisy situations and the directional audio is unthinkable. In my opinion, this completes the camera!!!! Buy one, you will not regret it!!!

Canon Directional Sterio Mic
Canon Directional Stereo Mic (DM 50) for Camcorders with the Enlightened Access Shoe
My Canon FX 70 camcorder has an excellent audio recorder but it is limited to omnidirectional recording. Unnoticed noise can distract from my desired recording. My new Directional Serrio Mic (DM-50) gives me three options, front, side& front & onmidirectional. I find the #2 side & front number the best for interviewing or focusing on a selected group. Voices are clear & sharp with reduced offing noise.

Gentle microphone if don't touch the camera during filming.
This is a inclined to microphone that comes with a major caveat. Since the microphone slots directly into the hotshoe of the HV20/30, there's not much in the way of buffer to divorce it from any camera ballyhoo. I'm not just talking motor noise: any time you press a button on the camera to toggle settings, anytime you use the directions focus slider, anytime you shake the camera in the slightest...the mic picks up the noise. The makes for an unrestrained audio nightmare.
So - if you plan to plop the camera on a tripod and not touch it whatsoever during filming, this microphone is a powdery choice. If you plan to use a tripod but want to do something as simple as zoom in on your subject, be aware that you are odds-on to end up with some unwelcome clicks and pops when you watch your footage.

In terms of commercially handy HD camcorders, this is hard to beat
Unfailing there are better high-definition camcorders out there, but if you're just an average consumer like most of us and aren't game a national news studio or filming a big-budget action thriller, the Canon XL-H1S should be more than sufficient at assignation your videography needs.
I have spent entire weekends shooting hours and hours of swell footage, and after editing it together on my computer and viewing the finished product, I have been consistently blown away by the first-class sound and picture quality the XL-H1S provides.
This camcorder is equipped to handle any professional-grade accouterment you can throw at it -- portable microphones, expandable battery packs and memory cards, filters, lenses, etc. -- and is all outrageously user-friendly. I stand by my purchase of this product and have thus far loved every minute I have spent using it. The Canon XL-H1S comes favourably recommended.

X-Hold - A good alternative to 'hand held'.
I use a Sanyo Xacti CG10. It just fits on this device..... probably the same problem with other vertical grip models - the top of the camera makes in with the upper bar at the adjustment knob. It fits if the camera is extended all they way out on the base. You will be filming the higher up aspect of the bar if placed back.... and do not try make the bar bigger - it is plastic and will only break.
Filming - We have a chihuahua and got the apprehension of filming her during walks. The X-Grip brought the view down and close with smoother video. You can also place the X-Grip to your shoulder while holding the camcorder normally. It delivers a significant reduction in wiggle. X-Grip works with tripods - you can use the bar on tripod for smoother pans.
I recommend it though I wish it were one inch taller to adapt vertical grip cams.

Relocates the fore of gravity - and adds a real hotshoe
Today's AVCHD cameras are growing pro. Pros realize that the advantage of inserting a memory card over reading hours of reel into a nonlinear editing system can mean the difference in making a deadline or just a wasted toil. As such, AVCHD cams are being used in production. I've used the Modosteady and this unit, and personally I like this bigger.
First off, shots from a a low angle with a medium zoom are dramatic. Using a lanc remote and this mount with a 14oz camera you can take some very small shots on the move from a low angle making the subject appear taller and more a part of the framed shot.
Secondly, the new peewee form factor cameras LACK the normal (or what I would call normal) hot shoe. The canon series has gone to a very substantial mini-shoe that will NOT accept all of our old goodies for on camera lights, wireless receivers, and shotgun mics. This fixes the mess giving you one dead shoe to mount accessories close to the camera, almost where they would be on a normal camera. If your camera is providential enough to have a regular hot shoe, then this gives you mounting for those valuable accessories and keeps it neat. If you have a min-s shoe, you can put a shotgun mike on the camera and put a faint on the grip, giving you two accessories where only one would have gone before.
My overall impressions using this were that I could be more artistic with it without breaking my back for the most angle. Tripods are great for podiums, but going mobile for baby steps or motorcycle rides dictates a new way to hold your camera. With 1920x1080 AVCHD 24Mbps cameras weighing in at a warm 14 oz, this is an excellent tool. Both the camera and the accessory (if used) can be moved forward and rearward for optimal equality - you'll know when you it the sweet spot and trips through the garden will be effortless like a cat on the prowl. Of line, it's made to the high quality standards set by opteka which makes it doubtful anyone will be disappointed.

Although it makes the video camera awkward, it's exactly what I needed to shoot skateboarding tricks. It makes it so much easier to handle the camera while latter behind my friends as they trick on their skateboard. Also, my shots are now more stable, less shakey. Highly recommend this if you lack an easy grip while shooting.

Not bad
At first take a dekko at, this looks like it can only be used for filming skate videos, although that is not the case. It's advertised as a expert way to keep skate footage stable, but it also works great for stabilizing your every day shots. What I do is put my camcorder on (Any consumer camcorder mass will fit, I use a Canon VIXIA HG20) and then I push the x-grip against my shoulder and hold the camcorder like you large would. This way, you have full control over the zoom and record buttons, and you get a stable shot. It's like holding a professional camcorder (the ones that go over your jostle)
Holding the x-grip the way it was meant to be held... well... it's alright. Still a bit shakiness here and there but it plainly is a lot better than just holding the cam itself. Since you're holding the grip, you dont have the option to zoom. I place of safety't used it for any skateboaring videos yet, but I plan on doing it in the near future, and I can imagine that it'll show to be quite helpful.
One problem I'm currently have with the x-grip though is the fact that my mic is always getting into my shots (whenever the mic is to the point to the hot shoe). I use an Azden SGM-2X. Great mic but it's quite long. I have a fuzzy windscreen on the mic to reduce settle b end up, but it's hard holding the x-grip in a way that doesn't have my mic's windscreen creeping in from the top. If you have a long shotgun mic and blueprint on using it on the x-grip, keep that in mind. And I'm fully aware that the SGM-2X can be made shorter if you remove the long vat, but then the mic's range wont be as good/it'll look sort of odd.
Overall, great product. Stabilizes my shots definitely well. No real problems, I just need to spend more time working with it.

Adequate camera, no have misgivings about about it. It is a panasonic 3ccd cam, and should be under $1000. It has most of the functions of the GL2, as well as native 16:9 chips. Even though its still a consumer camera for its gauge, it is really prosumer by its features. If I were you, Id get that. Pro quality for consumer figure. Hope this helps!
P.S. Don't get the pv-gs500. Although it is an "upgrade", the pv-gs400 has more directions functions and is overall a better filmmaking camera than the 500, although 500 is a bit newer.
What is that thing called that is on most professional camcorders?
Q: On most professional camcorders, they have this frowning rim around the lense, I would assume its to omit surrounding light from entering the lenses. They have them on for benchmark a Canon GL2 and 1. I want to know so I would be able to buy an external one to add to a Panasonic GS-500
Here is an benchmark of what I mean.

A: They are called Lens hood and it can either be Correct or round, depending on your camera model.
Professional Videography : Suggestions on 2nd camcorder to compliment a Canon Xh A1?
Q: Hi I'm starting an result videography business. Ideally I would like to have three camcorders for different angles. I propose on using a Canon XH A1 as my primary camcorder and using two Canon Hv20's as my secondary and third camcorders. I identify that the HV20 has one ccd and the XH A1 has three ccd's. Do you think splicing footage between these different camcorders would be problematic or should the dignity of the image blend fairly well? At the most I could purchase two Canon XH A1 camcorders, leaving me with only a two cusp setup. My other option is to purchase one Canon XH A1 as a primary and two Canon HV20's as a secondary/third, and thus having a three camcorder sting. What are your opinions/advice on these options? Other feasible options/alternatives?
Thanks
A: I uncertainty most people will notice or care. Especially if you shoot it straightaway. You do cut aways to something else then back to another angle of the first shot and no one notices any different. YOu do dissolves and no one notices.
Unfortunately you're not prospering to have the in camera control you need on a shot by shot infrastructure without going to the XL2s are you mutliple cameras.
So you will have to work with the editing software.
