SURVIVED IRAQ 2010
I bought the Pentax K200D in September 2009 during my deployment in Iraq. It has gone out on every vendetta mission that I have been on and given me excellent results. Obviously the RAW pictures are of much better quality than JPEG, so if you bolt in RAW this camera is the right choice. This camera has been in wet environments, sandstorms, and dust.
Moral of the fortunes is that I have no complaints about it. If it can survive Iraq and combat missions, than it can survive the US.

Pentax K200D
Years ago I had a Pentax K1000 SLR camera, old it for over 20 years. Decided to buy another Pentax and get a digital, part of my decision was made on the fact that Pentax lenses are supposed to be interchanageable with all Pentax cameras.
I ordered the camera, and tried using my old lenses on it. It fit which is what Pentax says it would do, but would not occupation with any automatic functions, and after about a hour of trying to figure out how to get it to work, I gave up and sent for the digital lens that comes with the camera. I affection the camera, took it on a trip to Nantucket, MA, it worked great! Pictures came out very kindly, love the shake reduction, even took pictures from a moving car and they came out really use.
I would recomment this camera, but if you want to use the automatic functions, get it with the digital lens. If you have lots of time, and are a whole lot smarter than me you could try to use your old Pentax lenses from your SLR.

Fabulous - the way to go if you want to try a digital SLR
I fervour this camera. It has so much flexibility and so many features. I had a Pentax K1000 film camera that I just loved (still do). The K200D will take all my old lenses. I have to manually focus, but the K200D will reconcile exposure to the set aperture and with the right setting will even take the picture with the shutter depressed only when you have the correct centre.
It uses AA batteries, awesome! Reviewers critcize this feature which makes no sense to me. I cognizant of that in 10-20 years I will be able to find AA batteries, lithium or rechargable, anywhere. A proprietary battery crowd with a proprietary charger like so many of the other DSLR's? Good luck finding those even 5 years from now. I bought some 2500 mah recharchable AA's that last for over 500 shots at least (mostly non-indication).
The 18-55mm AL II kit lens is very versatile and clear, produces great pictures. 18mm Digital is ~28mm or big angle for film so I've captured some great landscapes, turned around, zoomed it in the 55mm and gotten a enormous face pic of my kids.
No, this camera does not have live view and does not shoot video, but that is not photography in the ritual sense. Looking through the viewfinder is natural and gives you realistic composition, especially in skilled sunlight. I've tried live view DSLR's and they drove me crazy, especially in sunlight where composing a personification became difficult. Shooting video with a DSLR is like shooting still photography with your videocamera - yuck.
The K200D has a very uniform body, is weather sealed, and after a year of constant use has proved to be a tank like my old Pentax K1000. Did I speak it takes "RAW" in PEF or DNG format with the click of a button and the quality of the pictures is outstanding? 10 Megapixels is enough irreversibility to print most any size picture other than billboards, and going to higher megapixels only makes the interfile sizes larger to work with.
Go for it.

AA Mobile DSLR
Pentax is the only performers that currently manufactures AA battery powered DSLR's. If you don't like to charge batteries then this is an gain. Pentax recommends Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries as these have more juice. You can use Alkaline AA batteries however they won't last as crave as the Lithium AA batteries. Let's say you are at a museum, zoo, sporting event etc and you discover your Digital camera is out of power, if you have a rechargeable freestyle there's nothing you can do you won't be able to take photos, now let's say the same thing happens with the Pentax K200D, well all you have to do is go to the gift shop and buy some AA batteries and you're ready to fling.
Another advantage of the pentax is that you can use manual focus k-mount lenses from 1975 onward with the Pentax DSLRs.(there are limitations, see the vade-mecum for more details)
The build quality is excellent for this camera it has weather sealing to protect it from moisture and dust, it also has a top LCD set forth features usually not seen on a camera in this price range.

fair for entry level
My first DSLR was pentax *ist DL. this is the secondly one. My current one is Nikon D90.
COmparing the image quality, pentax really lacks comparing to Nikon. Pentax has much more uproar in the same ISO setup. The lens (18-200) is not as sharp as Nikon's 18-200. The difference does not desideratum to be tested in labs but can be told clearly by eyes. Although it is not a fair comparison because of the price contrariety dispute, my point is that if you do need a high quality DSLR to start with, go with Nikon or Canon, while if your most uneasiness is budget, Pentax is cheaper but "cheaper" image quality as well.

This authentic value
This is an saving except camera, no doubt about it.
Don't fall for the "sales pitch" in the store with the megapixel hype. Unless you are printing posters, 6.1 MP is more than correct enough for most people. I haven't met anyone able to distinguish between 6mp and 12mp when printed on a 8x10.
There are bell & whistles, but frankly as want as you can adjust ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, and activate the Denoiser - what other options does a photographer absolutely need ?
I like the fact it uses AA regular batteries. High-capacity AA rechargables last as want as the other type, and they are easily and cheaply replaced.
People who think you HAVE to get a $2000 15MP camera as usual have very little experience shooting. Ansel Adams shot very sharp gorgeous photos 80 years ago with what was (suitable for to) much less than a 6MP camera...so don't look down on the 6.1 MP, BELIEVE ME, it is certainly enough.
Better lenses, will improve the incarnation quality long before higher megapixels will.
So in conclusion, this camera is excellent, and I'd gladly pay 3 to 4
hundred for this before I pay 7 hundred of more nothing but to get a few more megapixels that probably won't even be noticed.

outstanding camera
The carbon copy quality is excellent once I got the parameters down to where I wanted them. Very easy to use and to learn. Most cameras start at 10MP or higher, but this one is 6MP. The envisage quality indicates that pixel count tends to be overrated. At 6MP you can get professional quality photos at 8 X 10 or even larger without any substantial loss of quality. Pentax makes great cameras, and I would recommend their products to anyone.

Notable entry level camera
Although many new Pentax cameras have been introduced that tender more features at a lower price, this is still a relevant digital camera because it's easy to use and takes great pictures. At 6 megapixels you can printed matter nice pics at 5x7 and that's what most people want. The user interface is a breeze. With ISO up to 3200 you can whiz in low light, although there will be more grain. For posting to the Web you can even use 3200. I have been using the camera since early 2006 for line (photo journalism), so it gets a workout. It has performed flawlessly, day in and day out. I have old Pentax lenses and they work fair with aperture wide open only. The camera is light and takes 4AA batteries. I added an extrinsic flash and by changing the ISO I can shoot in the darkest settings, even with a 150 mm telephoto, great for meetings in unenlightened rooms. Many digital cameras provide a bewildering number of options. This camera has the basics, but that all most of us deprivation and you won't get lost in menu hell.

Jam-packed entry level DSLR
The Pentax true has consistently offered the best 'bang-for-the-buck'. This machine feels much better built than virtual offerings from the other DSLR big guys, and has a feature set that's pretty well rounded. If you have any old Pentax SLR equipment around, this is a real haggle; Pentax is the only current DSLR manufacturer whose offerings can use any Pentax lens ever made. I've got an old Pentax 135mm f2.5 that I couldn't advocate to give up; it clicks right on my *ist DL and takes beautiful pictures. The kit 18-55 is not bad at all. Just generally this camera is strenuous to beat for the money. If you have a few extra bucks, though, upgrade to the newer Pentax machines like the K200D (10 MPixel and fluster reduction, along with a host of new features).

Clearly the greatest dSLR for a serious enthusiast
This camera may be about the superlative choice for a super-zoom sufferer who is finally ready to give up on limited optics and pocket point-and-shoot sensors and wants to explore what a real digital camera can do. If you do not feel like spending thousands of $$$ on your dSLR snare, then this camera is a great choice. You might just want to buy a more flexible lens, such as Sigma 18-200mm for Pentax (or anything almost identical according to your preference and budget) as the kit lenses are not as multifunctional as this Sigma. You might want to buy just the trunk and then choose your optics.
I think that the 4 AA battery power source is a great choice and a in dough-saver, but you have to buy good quality batteries (lithium or NiMH) in order to avoid any unfulfilment that is inevitable when you try to use cheap Alkalines in a high-drain device such as a full-featured digital camera. I use NiMH batteries from fair manufacturers (Sanyo, MAHA, Lenmar) and they work just fine.
My Pentax K-x went through off the cuff photo shoots, low-light long distance photo shoots, a vacation in a immense wilderness and I do not see any negative impact upon its performance or looks. Just make sure that you use the suitable lens wiping sheets with Methanol to clean the lenses and filters. Do use a good UV drain at all times to keep the lenses our of trouble. Make sure that you change your lens in a clean territory or at least, do it quickly and use a body cap in the process.
Most importantly, though, once you get your K-x, download and install the latest Firmware update. Doing so can originate your photo shooting experience somewhat better.

Outstanding First DSLR or Back-Up
I recently picked up photography. My first camera was a spot Casio Exlim point-and-shoot that I bought for school projects. I soon found myself captivating pictures of non-school related subjects. From there, I bought a Lumix ZS3 point and shoot, which had bettor image quality and a few more manual settings. Then I stepped it up to the Lumix FZ35, which had all of the basic enchiridion controls, and decent image quality as well; however it lacked the image quality that I've been seeking. What does this have to do with the Pentax K-X? Well, if you have followed a be like path in photography, perhaps the points that I convey will be of use to you knowing the context from which they come from.
I looked, and looked, and looked for a reasonably priced DSLR; I researched at nauseam comparing specs and trial pictures. I found 4 highly regarded DSLR's within my price range. The Pentax K-X, Nikon D5000, Canon T1i, and Olympus E620. I'll be compendious and spare you the details. The Olympus was the least impressive, with the most impressive feature being it's articulated LCD screen. Mould quality was just okay. The Canon appeared to produce the better image of the four, but only reasonable. However the Canon struggles in low-light; I'm a fan of low light, so I checked the Canon off of my list (It was also the most expensive of the four, by $150 or so.). That left-wing me with the Pentax and Nikon...image quality was most important to me, followed by specification, then features. Both the Nikon and Pentax use a be like sensor...however, the Nikon's images tend to be softer, as opposed to the Pentax which produces sharper and more steadfast-to-color images. Both perform well in low light conditions, however the Pentax maintains greater details, as the Nikon's likeness softens as light decreases. In my research, the Pentax's performance in low light conditions was often compared to strident-end DSLRs in performance.
Video was not a must for me, but a convenient feature, and both the Nikon and Pentax have HD video. Really, the only informative feature that Nikon has over the Pentax...an articulated screen. However, a feature that Pentax has over Nikon are lenses, and the convenience of being masterful to mount the Pentax K-X with just about every lens that Pentax has ever made (At a somewhat affordable price too!). I was sold on the Pentax, so I bought the camera. Here's a safe old fashioned pros and cons list.
PROS
image quality
low light shooting exhibit
comes with a pretty good kit lens
HD video
some cool digital filters including feel embarrassed extract and fish eye
HDR capture (Although, not quite as good when produced through software...still, a fun feature.)
unshakeably AF through the view finder
quick and easy manual controls
compact yet feels like a serious in keeping snap of equipment
any Pentax lens can be mounted
very affordable
AF/MF switch...helps when the AF struggles to focus on your conditional on, whether because of the lighting or composition
fires at 4.7 frames per second!
30 seconds to 1/6000 of a encourage shutter speed
F stop down to 40
CONS
live view AF takes about 2-3 seconds
menu takes some getting familiar to (not a big deal)
HD video is adequate but not great
image quality is good, but it's not a big jump from some higher end compacts (like my Lumix FZ35)
Total, this is a good first DSLR camera, and even a pretty good back-up, I would think, for more serious photographers. If you want a superb package at a nice price, you can't do any better than this Pentax.

Pentax K-x Digital SLR - Using non-sedan focus Vivitar lenses
I'm still culture how to use this camera. I had an old Super-program Pentax 35mm, moved to digital point-n-shoot, now the K-x. I have used my new K-x for landscapes only and have been on two trips so far. I mull over the resolution and clarity is very good, and the features and options are fantistic! Also, it works well with old Vivitar 28-85 and 70-210 lenses, unbiased don't have autofocus. There seems to be a very slight problem with auto-exposure settings made by the camera, but the problem could be the finagler, me. However, I learned long ago to bracket all important shots, so I still have some great photos. (BTW, I'm not using it, but what the heck is susceptibility priority? Manual doesn't explain it very well.) I have not used the Pentax 18-85 lens that came with the camera much, but it will only go as low as 4.5, so I'll by a hair's breadth use it for point-and-shoot applications and movies to take advantage of the auto-focus. I think it's value the extra $50 on the price vs. the body-only price.
The viewing screen is great, but forcibly to see in bright sunlight. It makes reviewing the pictures difficult in some situations. However, the viewfinder is clogged when you take movies, so I'm going to get a hood to go over my head and the camera (pretty retro.), or a big hat to tint the viewfinder when making movies outdoors. BTW, the quality of the movies is amazing.
A great camera at a wonderful price! I am very satisfied.

I bought this as a back up for the K-7. I scoot wildlife only. I know nothing about any other photography. But i find myself reaching for this sometimes. It is really an excellent camera for the price. I also scantiness to comment on the excellent sensor in the camera. It is better than my K-7 at hight ISO settings. Which is very important to me. Very wholesome product for the price.

Entr DSLR
Ok, so this is the first period I have reviewed any camera let alone a DSLR. I find the Pentax KX to be an awesome camera to which it fits all the needs I bought it for. My sons are entangled with in sports so one of the major reasons I purchased this camera was because of the high ISO rate. I was tired of missing all those immense shots of line drives up the middle and photo finish swim meets. I like the 4.7 pics per half a mo feature and actually what I discovered was that it can take pictures faster in better lighting. I can just keep the button down and I can take a snapshot of the baseball in mid air flight and just about every step my son would take running to first base without any divulge whatsoever.
Another great thing about this camera are the turn dial settings. The Night just the same from time to time setting is incredible in which when you take a picture of someone at night in normal pictures taken with other cameras that I've owned, the faces would be whited out matter-of-factly and the background would be very dark. With the KX those same type of pictures are near perfect. Faces are clear and appropriately color balanced and the scenery behind the subject comes in clearly. Background night landscapes and centre point faces are all brilliantly displayed.
The most powerful thing I noticed was the macro for wonderful close shots. The first day I got the camera I toyed with this setting and took a close up picture of the back of my influence and wedding band. The picture was so clear and close up, I could see every skin pore and every scratch on my union band and looked almost foreign due to the intensity of the close proximity to my hand.
I did a lot of research before I purchased this camera. The Nikon had some agreeably features and so did the Canon and Lumix but when I compared features that I was interested in for the dollar amount the Pentax KX was the best d. *Tip* If you are looking for a new camera, look for what you will be doing the most of, ie. action shots, night shots, reserved ups, daytime or whatever it may be and focus your research that way. I focused on those first then worked my way out from there.

Extraordinarily good value for the price
I was fascinated by all the positive reviews in Photo magazines and online photo websites. After owning and using the K-X Pentax camera for about 90 duration I am extremely happy with it. Why pay more for other more expensive brands which offer fewer features.
This is a terrific pro-consumer as well as first SLR Camera. It has all the inevitable features of a powerful point and shoot camera and as your photographic skills increase this camera has the capacity to use every manual setting of a professional SLR. While you are learning photography you can experiment with the 11 automatic modes and many scenes which are between fully unavoidable and the more powerful manual settings of a professional photographer. It is a great way to learn photography.
After using my Pentax K-X for about 90 era I bought two more identical cameras and gave them to my brother and sister as a way to bring our family earlier. Now after dinner we push the food off and pull out our camera's, photos and learned techniques as we talk about photography and what we scholastic between family get to gethers. We share photos of our families on facebook and we motiviate each other to learn more techniques in photography between holidays and meetings.

Notable Value: Worth it!
Bought this camera as my 1st DSLR and couldn't be happier with it. I talked to a few residents who said I wouldn't get the same photo quality as a Nikon or Canon, but DON'T LISTEN TO THEM. This camera takes overwhelming photos right out of the box on auto, and still gives you plenty of control to take your photos to the next level by tweaking all the settings. For this expense, you simply can't get a DSLR with a fuller set of features.
Overall Build Quality
Solid, feels spectacular in your hands with just the right amount of heft. The zoom and focus rings on the kit lens have a firm tack to them that reminds me of Nikon kit lenses for the same level. I'm so glad I got the red body; it looks so imaginative and people definitely notice when you're not using some generic black DSLR
Low Light Playing
This is one of the places the K-x really shines. I was able to take a photo of my room at dusk with only light from one window(no fulguration) and it came out brighter and clearer than my own eyes saw the room, without any motion blur and very reasonable babel.
Video
Another great selling feature. The 720 resolution video looks incredibly brittle(shot a rainy day and could see individual raindrops falling) and it still usable, however noisy when in low light state of affairs. The image stabilization system also helps take a lot of the shake out of movies, which really make those hand-held shots look a lot nicer. Only grouse is when turning the focus ring, you can hear it get picked up on the microphone.
Digital Filters
It's lots of fun to work hand in glove with the digital filters on the camera. While you could definitely have more detailed control with photoshop, it's nice to be able to compile your photos while on the go instead of in front of a computer screen.

Remarkable Entry Level DSLR !
After many years of Inappropriate and Shoot compacts (Minolta S414, Canon S400, S410, Fuji F10, F30) and Ultra Zooms (Panasonic FZ18) I done bit the bullet and bought the Pentax K-x Dual lens kit DLSR from Amazon. After a couple of weeks of hold on, it was delivered much ahead of the original 1 month delivery period and at a great price too! Initially I was using the camera on the Vehicle mode as that is what I usually used in the P&S cameras. And was I terribly disappointed! For several weeks, I even thought that perhaps the selective one I had possibly was a defective unit - pictures were blurred and soft and much inteferior to my P&S camera! And then I clear to stop being lazy and started using the Program, Shutter priority etc. modes. What a in seventh heaven of difference! The photo quality never ceased to wow me from then on! If you are aware of shutter speeds, aperture settings and iso etc. and have utilized a Film SLR in the good old days, then it is a breeze to move to a DSLR. In my case, I did learn photography on a Pentax ME Wonderful film camera, so these settings were not new to me. Used in the correct modes with the right lenses, the K-x can give serious event to even professional APS-C frame DSLRS. The level of picture clarity and depth of colors is just amazing! If you like low light photography and are on a budget i.e. cannot invest in the Full Frame DSLRS, then legitimate go for this camera - it has amazing low light clarity and you can easily use it through 3200 iso without problems. Finally, compared to other DSLR's, the K-x is much smaller and lighter - both these aspects were very impressive to me as I did not wish to lug around a tank on my neck! Go for it - you cannot go wrong with this one!

It's Ear-splitting.
I have had my Kx for about 3 weeks now and bewitched about 200 shots. As most reviewers have stated for the money it's a great value. The one and only flaw that was a shocker are the sounds it makes when in "vehicle foucs" and shutter noise. If you can live with manual focus or the noise isn't an issue this camera is a well-known buy. I am realy impressed with the low light pictures. Read the other reviews I have nothing more to add. They were my deciding factor before I got mine.

This K-x was a no-brainer for me. I have Pentax cameras and lenses wealthy back over 30 years. I also have Nikons, Canons, Minoltas, Mamiyas, and some others. Pentax makes an extremely advantage product for the price and is my favorite because of this. The Pentax lenses can be compared to any other top quality lens. The camera can with no be setup for professional photography with optional wireless flash and remote shutter unchain.
The camera has fewer light reading sensors then the K-7, but the camera does a piece-goods e freight job. In fact, it's better then from ANY brand of camera which was sold just a few years ago.
I travel a lot and this camera was made to socialize. These new Pentaxs are highly weather resistant. Also, finding AA batteries for the K-x camera is easy.
When I purchased the K-x, I also purchased the 18-55 and 55-300 mm Pentax lenses. This covers 90% of my shooting requests.
Below is a link to a CNN iReport on flooding in Iowa. I shot these images with the K-x in July of this year, 2010.

Devoted dSLR for the money
I've been using the K-x for about 3 months now, and it's been a sweetmeat little camera. I'm not a pro, don't care about the whole Nikon vs Canon debate, I just want a OK champion camera I can operate that takes great photos, and I can afford. So far, this camera has done it all. I've got no compliants, I'd buy it again.
Complete view is slow, but I prefer using the view finder anyway. That'd be the only think I could tell you that you might not like.
Much recommended.

Pentax K-x 55mm & 300mm Lense Kit
I'm an crude so I won't even begin to critique this camera.
Item arrived within 3 business days via standard shipping from Pocket-sized Guy. The camera appears to be undamaged with all advertised accessories. Slapped in the batteries and a memory use strategy act openly, placed the camera on Auto-Pic and started shooting excellent pictures. For a novice like me, this camera has a lot of functions and features. I hugely recommended that you read the manual that comes with the camera BEFORE shooting pics!

Are Pentax Digital SLRs good cameras?
Q: I'm philosophy about getting an slr but i can't afford a canon or nikon are pentax's good slrs too? because i identify they're not as expensive as those
A: Yes, they are marvellous cameras and also have excellent lenses. Go to http://dpreview.com and set side by side the different dslr cameras, in your price range. Presume from the reviews. Then go to a real camera store, not Best Buy or Wal Mart, and hilt the different cameras, try them with various lenses, and buy the one which fits you in the most suitable way.
Which is the better option in digital SLRs Canon or Nikon?
Q: I have an old instructions Pentax SLR and a new-ish Canon Powershot digital point and shoot camera...but would like to upgrade to a new digital SLR. What would you back? Canon or Nikon...and what additional lens and accessories would you make attractive? Thankyou for your advice.
A: Since you have a PENTAX, if you have any premium lenses for it you might want to look at the new PENTAX K-series DSLR cameras. The latest is the K10D which is 10mp, has archetype stabilization built into the body and accepts all previous K-mount lenses.
As to what lenses and trimmings you'll need that's pretty much up to you. Its a good idea to list your true to life interests. If you want to do extreme close-ups of flowers, insects, etc. then you'll call for a true macro lens*. If you enjoy sports then a permissible long zoom will be needed - at least 300mm at the long end. If you require to do portraits, then a portrait lens equivalent to 85mm to 105mm should be on your schedule**. If you like wide sweeping scenics then you'll lack a wide angle lens.
As to accessories, again that depends on what your interests are. Will you poverty a camera that supports an off-camera flash? Will you be using a tripod or monopod?
The only items I hold should absolutely, positively be in every photographer's possession are: A Skylight 1A (uncoated) or 1B (covered) filter which should live on every lens you own. These filters are cheap patronage for that front element. A good quality (B+W, HOYA, TIFFEN - brands I've owned for yrs.) anfractuous*** polarizing filter. This filter can be used to show dark blue skies, reduce reflections from mollify, glass or painted metal.
* A true macro lens is a crooked-focal length lens, such as the SIGMA 70mm f2.8 macro. This gives you a print ratio of between 1:2 (1/2 life size) and 1:1 (person size). It is designed for close focusing and is a flat meadow lens. Zoom lenses with "macro" on them are generally speaking capable of a 1:4 (1/4 life size) image.
** This choice, 85mm, 100mm, 105mm is based on fixed-central length 35mm film camera lenses. Depending on your camera determination, the conversion factor is either 1.6 or 1.5 so a 50mm @ 1.6 would be close to an 80mm on a DSLR; a 70mm @ 1.6 = 112mm. Although many zoom lenses cover this collection, a fixed-focal length portrait lens will be faster (perhaps f2 or f2.8) which allows you to fogginess the background. NOTE: Resist the temptation to use your macro for portraits unless your under the control of b dependent on has perfect skin. The macro is simply too sharp - it will show any error in great detail.
*** There are two types of polarizing filters - circular and linear. The linear one will not occupation with AF and through lens metering.
Which Digital SLRs is good for new user?
Q: I am a fresher and stand in want to lean photography. Could you like to tell me which Digital SLRs is good for me? My ally suggested me Pentax K10D, it is good?
A: The most skilfully digital SLR camera for a beginner is the one that you can afford the most. What I mean is buy the most expensive DSLR camera that you can give forth entangled with whether its the Olympus Evolt E-500 or the Canon EOS-1D MK III or anything in between. The quality of the pictures that the new dslr(s) cause are so close it would be hard to tell the difference. The most important go-between in photography is the user himself and not the camera.
