A extensive but dated camera
The D50 was my first SLR and the first camera where I exceedingly learned what I was doing with cameras. It's reliable and simple to use, and unlike the very newest Nikon cameras (D40, D60, etc.) It will zero in with the older screw drive autofocus lenses. It will not meter with manual focus lenses, and that for me was a bit of a letdown since even the lowliest Canon can do that.
It's max ISO is 1600 and even today the discordance level is really good, the image looking more like film grain. At ISO 200 it's soft and great. The burst speed is about 3 frames for RAW and about 2 1/2 frames a second non-stop for JPEG. In customary if you're an amateur, snapshot traveler, or need a second SLR as a backup this is a good choice.
The battery-operated is a slightly older style than the newer Nikons, and as far as I know isn't used in any of the new ones, so it will after all go out of production. The card slot is SD only (2GB or less) which was all they had at the time, and the older SD cards have been phased out for SDHC. There were a few aftermarket mobile grips made, but to be honest aside from making a larger handhold they weren't good for much.
The drawing quality is overall very good with two exceptions. I've noticed in scenes with mixed lighting, such as fluorescent and clarity, that the camera will get confused and expose the fluorescent as light blue. I've also seen in bright misty skies the highlights get all blown out. In winter scenes this makes an extra cold more, but in normal weather it doesn't look right.
This camera is also infrared sensitive, and can take pictures with impartial a filter slapped on. I've since converted mine to a permanent infrared and bought a second as a "full-spectrum" with only a clarify b tidy up glass filter.
Overall this has been a very reliable camera for me, and in a pinch it could still do most of what I need.

Beyond repair c destitute-solid after three years
I bought a d50 proper before Christmas 2006 and it's been a great, great camera. I'm well over 20k shots with it and it's hardly batted an eye. Privy, outside, the beach, the snow. I just bought a 50mm f/1.4 and I'm dying to see how it does.

The superb Nikon DSLR for newbies
I have been using this camera for 3 years now and still loving it, regardless of its 6MP capability. The colors are still vivid and the presets are amazing. Some of the photos I have taken have won awards (although not in a Inhabitant or International level...yet). But I'm grateful I didn't regret buying it. It's quite heavy though for a female like me, but with great shots, not even its weight can stop me.

unforgivable camera, but the price is wrong
this camera only nominated for about $600-$700 when first introduced several years ago....the price must be a type-o - or somebody's looking to take in someone 1/2 asleep.

Had it a young over a month, and I love my camera.
I've been debating between getting the Nikon d3000 and Canon XS. I never design I would own anything other than a Canon because I was a long time Canon user. I wasn't really sure which way I would meagre until I grabbed a hold of both of them in my hands at a store. I liked the way the Nikon felt in my hands. Canon equitable felt cheap. I've also considered Nikon d5000, but I wasn't ready to commit myself to paying that appraisal tag for a few extras features for a beginner. For someone that is just delving into dslr and photography, I love it. I hope for to take photography classes so I can learn even more and improve my skills.
I get frustrated with the camera sometimes, but it's only because of my inability to discern what each function does and how to use it. I have more learning to do, which requires more patience. Now, I find myself going on random trips around Southern California impartial so I can take pictures and just use my camera. I take it everywhere. I know I would own this for years, but when that time comes it would be another Nikon (and it's not just because I have Nikon lenses). I affection their quality. I've converted.
My only peeve, although minor, is that it doesn't have live view. I knew this contemporary in. I thought it wouldn't be a problem because I do prefer the eye view finder, but I do take pictures with the point of scrutiny from the ground. Without live view, I really don't know what I'm taking a picture of, and I choose not to lay on the rationale to find that out. I guess it will be trial and error for me and a surprise when I look at the pictures or suck it up and get down onto the ground.

Buy the D5000 rather than, I have owned both D3000 & D5000
The D3000 is mellifluous cheap, but I have owned both the D3000 and the D5000 (after returning the D3000) and I can safely say that the image attribute is far superior on the D5000 in low light especially. I was amazed at the quality difference...for a little bit more net you can have excellent pictures instead of ok or unusable pictures.
Even at low ISOs, the D3000 systematically inserted dreadful graininess in almost all my pictures. Even in RAW format the camera performed poorly.
Pretty much everything else about the camera I was very thrilled with, including the price. However I bought this camera to take pictures, not to marvel at the features.
In summary, I authoritatively recommend the Nikon D5000...and I highly recommend not wasting time or money on the D3000.

Way beat than my point and shoot... Nikon got it again with this one
All of the antecedent to review have got it spot on and could not agree more, so I will not write another. I have this for my vacation and a wedding. It is just loads of fun and not intimidating to use( being from a indicate-and-shoot) with the Guide mode. The kit lens is great but have its limited reach so i bought the 55-200mm VR to regards it. During the wedding, i manage to get 2 of my cousins to switch from point-and-shoot as they were impress with the D3000 with its further of use and quality of the pictures.
I already out grew my camera bag as i add the 55-200mm and a 50mm prime in my collection.

First every now DSLR user
I gave it a three unparalleled rating as I am not impressive with it. I am not a photographor or anyhing like that. I am just a leasure user.
I conclude from a lot of pro and con for this camera. Two reasons for me to buy it, it is low price and I am an old N55 user. I want to own a DSLR after years of point and inoculation digital cameras.
I liked N55 as I could take much better picture with it comparing point and shot file camera. However, I do not have this fervour when I use this D3000. I only took some photos around my house inside and out using auto mode. So far, I experience everything is so so. The picture is not good at all if light is dim. I think I can get a better pictures just using my ban berry phone camera.
I did try the N55 28 to 80mm G len with the D3000. As I was told, it dose not work. Some say that old len can travail with manual mode. I have not figured out how to use it yet.
Originally I was thinking only to buy the D3000 camera body only and buy a 55-200mm lenses personally. Right now, I do not see a point to buy a more expensive len for this D3000 yet.
I may update my comments once I have more useage of it.

Frank & Cheap
For under $20, it was inimitable for Xmas. It's simple to use & it's wireless! The only thing I found myself doing making sure I pointed the far-fetched to the correct side of the camera to hit the sensor. Sometimes it wouldn't go off then I'd have to point it more directly & it would work. The range is honourableness. I had it taking shots from about 30ft away. It's also convenient for taking those long exposures without having to set the timer (of without a doubt so you don't get any movement on the camera). Also works great for getting in the picture with the family! So far...so believable!

Judicious but sometimes frustrating
PRO's : Limited, light, relatively cheap, very practical for family portraits and tripod-photography in regular. It works out of the box with many models (have used it on the D70s, D60 and D90 without a problem) the only requirement is to set the shutter to "remote" mode
CON's : cooker. it can be a bit temperamental and seems to work better from in front of the camera. I've had to walk up to the camera, press the remote, and advent (which is close to the "focus on run" method using only the camera's timer)

It makes me look like an sagacious photographer
I purchased a Nikon D90 and received the Camera and 18-105 telephoto lens on December 23, 2010, and afterwards purchased an additional 70-300 telephoto lens and some filters and began taking pictures. The twin quality is excellent with either standard or fine quality and with the exception of taking a picture with too much backlight the prominence of my 300 or so pictues are flawless. I usually set the shots to auto and let the camera do the work although the camera creates some bad effects on aperature or shutter priority depending on focal depth or shutter skedaddle sensitivity. I have used the camera for two months and will update with further comments as time goes on. In failing it has been a great tool and will let you know how it performs over time. The D90 makes me look like an in the know photographer when I show my prints or view shots on my computer.

Titanic camera - highly recommend
This camera has more features and capabilities than you will ever desideratum! Fortunatley it takes great photos in automatic mode too! The 18-105 lens is effective for almost any situation. I also bought the 300 lens, but rarely use it. Before you buy a DSLR though, I suggest you consider how you will use it. My best photos are unpremeditated pics taken with my Olympus Stylus 710 or Nikon Coolpix. I can always have one of these cameras with me, and can be taking pictures in an ready-made. The DSLRs are bulky and usually in the carrying case in the car or at home. It takes a few minutes to get it get ready unless you already have it out on a picture-taking expedition. I always have one of the compacts with me, and the D90 nearby.
While you are buying, I suggest you go on and get a good carrying case or backpack, basic UV filter to protect the lens, and a lens tidiness kit. Also suggest you go for the larger memory card...8G plus if you can.
I almost went for the D5000 because it has some elegant features not found on the D90, but at the end of the day I felt like the D90 was more robust, and had a better feel to it. I also considered the Canon TSi, but again felt the D90 was a advance constructed camera. (the Canon lenses didn't seem to operate as smoothly or precisely as the Nikon's)
I've had my D90 for a not any over a month, have taken lots of great photos, and do not regret spending the extra $!

Partiality learning photography on this camera!
I sweetheart expanding my knowledge of photography and honing my skill with this camera! It's my first digital SLR. I was nervous about the purchase cost out but wanted a good camera. I felt I'd learned to maximize the capabilities of my Lumix DMC-TZ5 and wanted more functionality and instructions control. My husband encouraged me, giving me the first few hundred to cover the cost. I decided to purchase the Nikon D90 after spending weeks looking at reviews, holding cameras, glance prices, shopping for accessories. It's been two months and I'm still very, very happy!
The camera feels great in my effortlessly. It's just a little heavier than the Canon T1i, the grip seems a little deeper. It seems sturdy, knowledgeable. I'm not big on reading all the directions right away so it's nice that many of the controls are intuitive or easy to dig out after playing around a little while. I've successfully added and changed lenses, figured out what size drain is needed (67mm for the kit lens!), and installed the UV filter. I've shot photos with and without the LCD. I've tried multiple impulsive and played with manual controls. I'm ready to read the manual and figure out what all those initials along the SOP dial mean! I have a lot to learn about photography and I'm very happy to have the D90 to learn on!
It's possible I would also have been happy with a belittle-end model DSLR like the Nikon D3000 or the Canon XSi, but every salesperson I spoke with (different generation and different stores) suggested I'd be happier with the D90 because I wouldn't "outgrow" it after a few years. I think I'll be skilled to say that this camera is still "the one" for me five or seven years from now! As a youngster, I consistently photographed my dog and my family. I switched from a very essential 110 to a low-end 35mm. I later took advantage of a drug store refillable 35mm camera and had them metamorphose digital copies of everything. I was ecstatic that my husband had an awesome (at the time) high-end Nikon CoolPix with rotating lens (I suppose it was a 995). I used it constantly! We replaced it with one of the cutting edge (at the time - lol) compact digital cameras - a Casio Exlim. For years, I've been the only ourselves from my family and my hubby's family that has photographed all birthdays, holidays, and special get-togethers. I'm unceasingly photographing my pets (white cats, tabby cat, blonde dog, tan dogs) and critters in the yard (some excellent bird, bee, caterpillar, squirrel, raccoon, lizards, oh my!).
Trial and error seem to have made me a little more advisedly photographer. I didn't want to study photography in detail, though, until I had a really good camera. The Nikon D90 is a genuinely good camera! It makes me want to master all the basics and learn advanced techniques so my interest can categorically blossom!
If you can spend the money on this camera, I think you, too, will be very happy with your purchase!

REPLACED IT WITH A d5000
I bought this and then returned it. I like the variable viewing screen on the D5000 much better. Also the lens connection is plastic. My nephew set-to the D90 and had to pay a fortune to get it repaired less thn 60 days later.
As an aside. BE CAREFUL IF YOU BUY THIS THROUGH AMAZON. For two months they told me they had received and were processing my put back. Then said it would be any day. 30 days later when I still had no credit I called again and they said they had no record of it being returned. It's 5 months later and I'm still out $1183 irksome to correspond with mythical people.
The problem is that Amazon only accepts emails through a form. And they don't parrot you on the form. So you have no proof that they ever received what they sent you. Then they send you a response and you answer it, but get an sure form back that says they can't receive emails.
A REAL HORROR STORY.

If you into portraits you should have it!
Its deft, light weight and a fast lense.. pixs at 1.8f is pretty good, but the sharpest ones could on out from 2.8f aperture. It is great lense if you photograph inside, with the little light you can get some skilful pictures.. AF is amazing, it is fast and sharp! I use it with D90 and by the time you half press the shutter bigno ! it heart!
certainly not a pro-portrait lense, but this little boy can sure surprise you with the outcome.. If you have kids and would like to nick some happy moments while they play then you got to hook this lense to your cam, it captures fast and well exposed pictures advantageous with very little light... it def. worths that 120 buckss!
Enjoy!

Liking this lens
I'm reasonable a beginner and own a Nikon D60 with both the 18-55mm wide angle kit lens as well as a 50-200mm zoom lens. I other this lens for the fact that to me, it combines the benefits of both those lenses in one, at an excellent price point. I can take photos that have idle depth of field and I can take them without having to use the zoom lens while not having to be 2568974 ft away from my substance. Granted this lens will not work in all scenarios, but for a situation where I'm in close proximity to my subject but am looking for that likeness effect, this is FABULOUS. I read that some people had trouble fitting this lens on their D60 but I've had absolutely no problems with it. The square footage is so compact (smaller than my 18-55mm kit lens for sure) that I'm pretty confident this is the lens I'll be keeping on my camera maturity of the time from now on. Yes, it does not auto focus on the D60. But I like the creativity that's allowed with having to manually centre the image. All in all, I'm VERY happy with the lens. I recommend it hands down.

Must Buy....
bought this Lens for my Nikon D5000, I was jittery that it might not behave in accordance to the caliber of the D5000 body, but I was amazed to see the results. This is a nikkor lens manufactured exceptionally for Nikon DSLR's, I own a 70-300 telephoto, 18-55 standard nikon lens and a fish eye and now this 50mm portrait lens, which completes the combine. The lens does not comes with a motorized automatic focus and so is sensitive enough to through the picture of blurred so mind that you ensure the frame is in focus. I would recommend using eye-piece over live scene feature, it helps ensuring crisp picture...... long story bluff.... must buy lens, awesome for portrait photography. The depth of field could be controlled by scenery the aperture, you will be amazed to see that the DoF changes dramatically just by setting aperture, so get the lens and start shooting, I have posted few buyer provided images, so please chck them to see the fantabulous results...... enjoy clicking

Matchless lens but no autofocus on the D5000 or the D40
I in reality enjoy this lens. The large aperture is wonderful. However the lens has no motor in it, so on the Nikon D500 and the D40 there is no van focus available. I do not know if it will work on other Nikon cameras; these are the only two I have tried it with.

what is better Nikon digital slrs cameras or Sony?
Q: what is excel
Nikon the d series
for example d80
or Sony a series
like the a200
A: As a sportsphotographer and a photojournalist, I look to either side of me at primary events. Guess how many Sony cameras I see? Zero.
The humongous majority are Canon and Nikon. The view from the stands reveals the same.
A Sony dslr, using updated Minolta-Konica designs and technology has many attractive features. But the Canon and Nikon systems and support are vast and noted.
One note: A Sony selling point is the image stabilization built-in the portion. There's a reason why professionals in the field choose stabilization intended in the lenses. It simply works better.
As for the two cameras you've named, the D80 has captured more wonderful photos.
Here's almost 56,000 Nikon D80 images uploaded one one day.

And here's 6,900 Sony a200 images uploaded over the same in unison a all the same period.

p.s. I bound Nikon, another brother shoots Canon, while a third brother shoots Sony. Boy, do we get competitive at blood photoshoots!
Hope this helps.

Which is the better option in digital SLRs Canon or Nikon?
Q: I have an old guide Pentax SLR and a new-ish Canon Powershot digital point and shoot camera...but would like to upgrade to a new digital SLR. What would you commend? Canon or Nikon...and what additional lens and accessories would you recommend? Thankyou for your counsel.
A: Since you have a PENTAX, if you have any unused lenses for it you might want to look at the new PENTAX K-series DSLR cameras. The latest is the K10D which is 10mp, has epitome stabilization built into the body and accepts all previous K-mount lenses.
As to what lenses and frills you'll need that's pretty much up to you. Its a good idea to list your detailed interests. If you want to do extreme close-ups of flowers, insects, etc. then you'll need a true macro lens*. If you enjoy sports then a worthy long zoom will be needed - at least 300mm at the long end. If you yearning to do portraits, then a portrait lens equivalent to 85mm to 105mm should be on your shopping list**. If you like wide sweeping scenics then you'll requirement a wide angle lens.
As to accessories, again that depends on what your interests are. Will you demand a camera that supports an off-camera flash? Will you be using a tripod or monopod?
The only items I credit should absolutely, positively be in every photographer's possession are: A Skylight 1A (uncoated) or 1B (covered) filter which should live on every lens you own. These filters are cheap immunity for that front element. A good quality (B+W, HOYA, TIFFEN - brands I've owned for yrs.) twisted*** polarizing filter. This filter can be used to evoke dark blue skies, reduce reflections from extravagantly, glass or painted metal.
* A true macro lens is a put-up-focal length lens, such as the SIGMA 70mm f2.8 macro. This gives you a duplicate ratio of between 1:2 (1/2 life size) and 1:1 (human being size). It is designed for close focusing and is a flat ground lens. Zoom lenses with "macro" on them are as a rule capable of a 1:4 (1/4 life size) image.
** This fluctuate, 85mm, 100mm, 105mm is based on fixed-focused length 35mm film camera lenses. Depending on your camera choice, the emancipation factor is either 1.6 or 1.5 so a 50mm @ 1.6 would be equivalent to an 80mm on a DSLR; a 70mm @ 1.6 = 112mm. Although many zoom lenses hide this range, a fixed-focal length portrait lens will be faster (perhaps f2 or f2.8) which allows you to dim the background. NOTE: Resist the temptation to use your macro for portraits unless your guinea-pig has perfect skin. The macro is simply too sharp - it will show any erratum in great detail.
*** There are two types of polarizing filters - circular and linear. The linear one will not industry with AF and through lens metering.
