I'm a photography student, what type of DSLR should I get for my major?

Q: I am new to the photography clearing, just started school for it. I haven't made my decision if I privation to be a photographer for regular photography (wedding or such) or being a professional photographer to be a photojournalist or something of the kind.
My semester will start soon and I am looking for a DSLR camera that can do the job but also not to precious since I am a starter. I have been suggested by my friends to get a Nikon D80 and I think I kinda like it, but is there any other cameras that can be compared to this one that might perhaps be even cheaper? I am planning to splurge about $1000 altogether, the camera and the accessories, since I'm strapped for cash because of the economy. So, can any one warmly suggest me any DSLR that can be compared to Nikon D80?
Oh, and please don't just say the output name, but tell me if you have any experience or not with the camera you are suggesting.

A: If you envision to be a photojournalist, you may want more than a Nikon D80, especially in the frame of reference of movie/video capability, a very long forcal period normal lense and image stabilization [VR] built-into-the-association; all of which you will not find in a Nikon D80. You would be better served with a digi-cam characteristic and shoot which provides the most camera features for your money.

If you are really on a budget and hanker after the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which has more features than most pro DSLRs that demand auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-trade mark Aga lense that comes with the FZ28.
