Photographers, fill flash question? Off camera flash questions?
Q: Hello. I've got a two part question. I've recently started using my fill gleam for alot of my portrait shoots and weddings. I really like the lighting on my subjects but have noticed some serious shadows of the themselves behind them in the shots. This is distracting to me and I'd like to know how to eliminate this event. I know it's not always avoidable, but any suggestions? I use a diffuser and I put my off camera flash on the hot shoe of my camera fa straight up. I have a diffuser like this, which I really like.

Interrogate 2: I also noticed that at times during the wedding that I just swallow that I would turn my flash off for some of the shots because I just wanted to use ambient moonlight but even on a bright and sunny day at an ISO of 400, the shots were turning out wonderful dark. Does having your flash just fastened to your camera, even if it's off affect how the camera reads light. Their is no reason I can think of that at ISO400 on a glowing day should give me incredibly underexposed shots. Any ideas? Thanks!
Thanks for the answers so far. I have gap control, shutter speed control, and of course, I can do enchiridion control. I usually just put my camera on aperture control. I conscious how my metering system works, I shot fully manual for many years and I get it. I've never had any lighting problems with my in camera meter when I don't have my instant on the camera but when it's on their even if turned off it's been acting weird. Strange stuff, valid trying to figure out why that happens.
Iso does affect concern to light. That's why if you're taking shots in a dim club you'd want to use ISO 1600 or 3200. Either way, my confusion wasn't answered. In a super bright, sunny day at f/8 at an ISO of 400 I shouldn't be getting exposures that are so shadowy that you can barely see anything. That's why I'm asking about the flash being on the camera.
I know you need crack, shutter speed, and ISO to determine exposure. I think my distrust is being misunderstood.
A: I think about if you're having that bad of a shadow problem from the flash, its out of the fill flash criteria. You're better off getting the twinkle up high and aiming it down at the subjects, hiding the shadows behind them at least moderately.
Part 2 sounds like a metering problem more than anything else. You might need to hard cash the metering from the whole exposure to the subject in the center, if you're shooting in a prerogative mode. If you're metering the entire exposure, it averages everything and gives you the upper-class scenario for the whole picture. If you do center spot metering, you will be gifted to get the subject properly exposed, which may kinda sacrifice your distance to some overexposure. In this case you might consider some fill flash. This would be the only situation that I would in truth use my on-camera flash. Everything else is up to my hot shoe flash and a flash bracket.
At ISO 400 you should be adept to shoot f/14 on a sunny day easily and have it come out trim. The only way I can conceivable see this being a consistent problem is if you're shooting them back to the sun. If you are, you will probably desperate straits to use that fill flash.
