Product Description
The AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a squeaky-performance super telephoto zoom lens that has been designed to proper the demands of both digital and 35mm format SLR users. It offers a 4.3x zoom with a scale of 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX Nikon D-SLR) and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that protect superior optical performance. This lens incorporates Nikon's second-epoch vibration reduction system (VR II) that allows flexible hand-held shooting by stabilizing the representative to the equivalent extent of using a shutter speed that is four stops faster when compared with a normal lens (as determined by Nikon performance test). The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) and IF (Internal Focusing) secure fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-well- elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, congruous backgrounds.

Outgoing lens but dusty -- QC issue
Very functional lens with good price. However, my copy has MANY dust specks inside the front and back of lens elements. It is not the name brand new NIKON lens should be. The dusts probably won't effect image quality, but it definitely would reduce the re-traffic in value of the lens. Nikon really needs to improve its quality control on this lens' movie.

Skilled quality at a pro-sumer price
This is an renowned lens and I just love it. Let me state right off the bat that I am a pixel-peeper. I sell sheep photos commercially, however, so I am a pixel-peeper by necessity--not just because I am obsessive-compulsive. If you are a pixel-peeper like me, this lens will not fail you. I have used a wide variety of consumer, pro-sumer, and professional offerings from both Canon and Nikon so I recall the difference between professional and non-professional quality.
*This lens is tack-sharp and resolves detail only just as well as any pro lens I have used
*This lens has a minimal/negligible amount of distortion
*This lens has a minimal/worthless amount of vignetting
*This lens has a minimal/negligible amount of chromatic aberration
*This lens feels very firm and well constructed
*This lens is priced very reasonably considering the performance
Now, I have not used this lens in low-cheerful conditions because it is not a low-light lens, so I can not comment on that. This is not a professional wedding photographer's lens; the 70-200mm f/2.8 or 80-200mm f/2.8 would be the lenses of option in that situation. I have, however, used it for outdoor nature photography, portraits, architecture, etc. and no one can tell me it isn't as artful as the aforementioned f/2.8 lenses in those conditions. This is the (underline "the") travel lens to have; there is no reason to bring any other telephoto lens. Objective this lens and a wide angle lens (such as the 20-35mm which I use) is all I need for any trip. I could go on but I won't; I think you get the reason. This is an outstanding lens at a great price. You won't be disappointed.

I safe haven't used the lens much due to cold weather, but my first impressions are very good. I bought this to get more reach than my 55-200VR. I am close to to go get the great results so many others have gotten.

This is obviously an AF lens
This is a very unalloyed lens that works pretty much as advertised. I use this with the D90. There are two issues that keep me from giving 5 stars.
1. The lens must be locked when the camera is sideways in a lens down mode. Locked means 18mm focal length. If not, the lens just creeps out until it is at full broadening, 200mm. This can make down pointing tripods shots a pain. Especially if you are bracketing and fancy the exposures to be identical in focal length. You must constantly check to see if it moved.
2. This lens has a very hot-tempered manual focus mode. Very small rotations mean big moves in focus. When shooting at 5.6 f choke up or so, the DOF is pretty short and focus needs to be right on the money. In addition to the touchiness of the heart ring, there is quite a bit of "slack" in the mechanism. This makes it quite hard to rock the focal point in and out to hit the correct focus.
Bottom line: You are always better off in AF when the conditions permit. The AF focus is razor intense. But, in low light, longer distance shots where the AF illuminator will not work or with low contrast shots the AF craze can be useless. Good luck getting a good manual focus if you are in any sort of stew.

Valid another positive review
When coupled with a VR equiped Nikon, you will be astonished at the quality of the handheld, low light shots. Pictures that would normally require a tripod, are now on with a point and shoot. I've gotten clear shots (non-telephoto) at a 15th of a second, and telephoto at a 30th! Don't by the kit lens that they be deficient in to force on you with the camera purchase. Buy the camera bare, and get this all-around "picture perfect" lens. You won't be dissappointed. There is a reason why this lens has so many large reviews.

One of my first choice lenses
This lens beats switching between the principal 18-55mm and the 55-200mm lenses I've had for so long. this lens is a lifesaver and serious piece of equipment. A little heavier than the 55-200mm, but benefit the extra weight through and through. A necessary staple in your lens library.

Vast Multi-Purpose Lens
This is the lens I've been waiting for. I contemplate it is now permanently attached to my Nikon D80. I keep remembering trips that I have taken carrying two lenses (28-80 and 70-300) and all the in a predicament of switching back and forth - not to mention the missed shots. This lens is quick to focus except in bloody low light. The Vibration Reduction gives me 2-3 extra stops. It has a lock, but I refuge't noticed the lens creep reported by others. The only downside for some might be its weight. Personally, it just feels more valid to me. I highly recommend this lens.

Very Friendly !!
I a moment ago recently bought the Nikon D-5000 with the 18-55mm lens and while taking pics inside I couldn't in the end zoom in from across the room to get a tight face shot or just a single person nip if two or three people were standing together. With this 18-200mm lens I can get the wide shot plus I can zoom in and get that acute face shot without changing lens. I can sit across an average size dinning/living chamber and get everyone in the shot or just a bust shot of a single person even though they are standing with others. The zoom is soft and precise and the auto focus is quick. You do need plenty of light though or adjust your cameras settings for be deficient in of light. It is a bit on the high dollar side but you get what you pay for, you spend less you get less, you spend more you get more. I think this is a great all around lens by nature and out.

Large Lens to complete your package
If you own the 18mm-50mm might as well pick this one up for greater zoom. It does unreduced your package as far as giving you a step to zoom. However, I only find myself using it at sporting events or in nature because I find it to zoomed in. I should have bought the 18mm-200mm and saved my boodle!

Vast product
This is a superb lense- I really didn't know much about lenses when I purchased it but learned a few things just by playing with this one. If you are looking for a lense that zooms AND has a to the utmost angle then you might want to keep looking. This has an AWESOME zoom but is not very widescreen (when I shoot objects, I have to obtrude really far back to capture it- not very suitable for standard shots- in the future, I will try to get an all in one lense- 18-300 would be immense if they even make them!)

Merit the money
This is the cheapest Nikkor zoom lens that will get you to 300mm, so is the strengthen quality. The lens feel little cheaper next to my 18-105VR ED lens.
I have shot the Moon with this lens. It came out fit with all the fine details of the moon.
But the lens is very slow to focus. I used this lens in an air show. It took lot of span to focus the fast moving jets.
You would need a tripod if you are zooming all the way and the lighting is not enough. Even on misty day light, pictures came out blurry when completely zoomed in. I think this will be the issue with all zoom lens without VR.
Van Focusing is noisy but I can live that.
But its definitely worth every single penny if you can't afford its costly clone VR.
You will not be disappointed. Picture quality is very good.
By the way, I have Nikon D90. I don't have any issues using this lens.
I'm unequivocally satisfied with the lens despite some shortcomings.

Nikkor Telephoto on a Budget for Nikon D90
I have a Nikon D90 kit with the 18-105 VR lens, and I wanted more telephoto reach for the kids' sports games etc. I found this 70-300 non-VR lens for one hundred twenty five dollars at Adorama dot com, shipping included, and received it two era later--wow. My impression is that it is definitely a budget lens but it does a pretty good job for the assess. It appears to be well-constructed and it is fairly light weight as the overall construction is made of nicely molded composite-fount plastic, so it is not flimsy. The lens comes with a hood and the telephoto adjustment action of the drum is just as smooth as my kit lens. This lens does not have its own built-in autofocus motor, nor an aperature calibrating ring. However, the D90 does have its own AF motor, which handles the auto focus and aperature just excellent, it is pretty fast and accurate. If your camera is the D5000/3000 or D40/60 which do not have an AF motor, I would recommend you avoid this lens unless you have a lot of continuously ad skill to manual focus your shots. The lens is definitely much softer than my kit VR lens, and absolutely not tack-sharp, especially at 200 to 300 mm range, and it needs bright sunshine skin to operate well. It's really not an indoor-use lens unless you have a high ISO and some serious flash capability. Even though this lens lacks the vibration reduction (VR) star, it is possible to hand-hold it and get some really good shots even at the far end of the range. However, a tripod or even a monopod provender much better stability for fast action shots. I also added a Tiffen 62mm polarizing trickle on this lens and that seems to make the colors better but doesn't help the sharpness, so I would still recommend using a drip with this lens. Overall, I would say that this lens will scratch your itch if you just want really honest far reach, but you're willing to sacrafice the extra tack-sharpness of the five hundred plus dollar VR Nikkor lens.

Not fully serviceable with Digital SLR cameras
This lens is described in the yield description as an auto-focus that will work on digital SLR cameras. While the lens is technically an "sedan-focus lens" it is misleading. If you have a digital SLR camera youR lens has a switch on the side that allows the camera to focus the lens when you gather the photo button. This lens does not do that. On a digital SLR camera it is just a manual focus lens. I called the seller and they wanted to make a case that the lens was auto-focus but did agree to allow me to return the lens. So while the lens was new and the hugeness specified, my complaint is that the description misleads you into thinking that this is a fully autofocus lens like-minded and fully functional on digital SLR cameras such as my Nikon D40 it is not.

OK,It's Not a Nikon, But the Sun-glasses is Good!
If you're in the same fiscal position as I am, you probably gulp when checking out the prices of OEM lenses. Sigma offers a really reputable alternative. This particular lens is as unwieldy as it's competitors, but gives good quality photos. The macro looks (read the instructions before using!) is a pretty neat bonus, too. Check out the Sigma set up if your wallet is not bulging with greenbacks.

For beginners like me, it's does the job.
Okay, i'm on a budget and i'm a novice. This does the job for me. The quality of this glass is really good and it does exceptionally well with macro shots.
It also produces extensive Bokeh.
[...]
But if you're taking macro shots of objects that are a few inches away, this isn't for you.
(Try getting sigma/canon 50mm and get an magnitude tube or buy a more expensive Macro lens if you have the moolah.)
This lens is really affordable and a must for semi novice like me.

Well good the money.
I bought this lens as a birthday benefit for my wife. We use it with our Canon Digital Rebel XT and it works perfectly. The lens has a very good illustration quality and is very easy to attach/remove from the camera. Of course, it comes with lens covers for both locks of hair of the lens and they are very good quality covers; actually, IMO, better than the lens covers that our Canon lens came with. They slow on well and provide great protection for traveling.
The lens has a switch on it to go from normal photography to macro shots. Comprehensive, I was impressed with the quality and ease of use with macro photos with this lens. It is easy to take good calibre macro shots with this lens (and trust me, I'm a beginner!).
Overall, I am very well pleased with this lens and conceive of you will be too!

Jettison!!!
Secure yourself the trouble. I purchased this lens to use for some basic shots around the house during the Holidays. First, every photo is very weak in the corners. You need to crop the edges away or darken the outer portions of the photo to be usable. More troubling, the AF motor stopped working after aprox 75 shots. Rightful stopped working and has only a faint clicking noise. Junk!! Going back after 2 life span and 75 shots...
Bought the Nikon 55-200mm AF-S VR today for $50 more and it's sharper, has better differ and colors, and since it's a Nikkor lens, it should make it past 75 photos.
You get what you pay for, get the Nikon...

Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
Q: The Lenses I have are:
Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor
Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D
Could they be made to order to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models?
Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Insurrrectionist XT?
Thanks.
A: I currently have occupied my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no trouble. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they inadequacy the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused.
Truthful now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my in circulation digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compati bility-lens.htm
At most a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 goods factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital age. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm.
As for your last suspect, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT.
Hope this helps.
Are Nikon lenses compatible with every camera?
Q: are all nikon lenses in accord with all nikon cameras?

if not what are compatible and what arent
A: To add to the above-mentioned answer: You could use the oldest lenses on a newer camera IF the lens has been AI'ed. (Vehicle-Index) Mounting a non AI lens on the wrong camera could break the camera mount.
Alternative Nikor lenses for Nikon camera?
Q: I fancy to buy lenses for my Nikon camera, actually a 50 mm one. What are the alternatives to a Nikor lens?
A: These are the only present-day third-party normal primes for F-mount that I'd consider plausible quality:
Cosina Zeiss-label 50mm Planar f/1.4
Cosina Voigtlander-stamp 58mm Nokton f/1.4
Cosina Voigtlander-label 40mm Ultron f/2
These are all manufactured in Japan by Cosina under document, not in Zeiss/Voigtlander factories - they're not really Zeiss/Voigtlander products.
