Such a bad addition to my photo equipment.
I bought this based on the guidance of a combat photog friend of mine. He mentioned it was a great lens and it would really help me reach out and nab the stuff I really wanted to (Royals games, Airshows). Combined with my Nikon D40, it has unquestionably given me the reach I need without a huge cash outlay. Plus it's not super disconsolate, although it takes a bit to get used to.

Immense lens - just get it
I've been using this lens for two years and regard I'd add my thoughts. While this is a plastic, consumer-construction Nikkor, the optics are great. It's light, produces major images and is a convenient size to take anywhere - this lens is very compact for a long telephoto. The big, fast pro trifocals is great if you need f/2.8, but for daylight shooting this lens delivers. The bokeh is surprisingly pleasingly, too. This is one of the best values in Nikon's lens lineup.
I've used it on FX, DX and film and it generates good results in all three formats. The VR emphasize is perfectly matched to this type of lens, too, and works well. You'll get sharp results at all focal lengths for most well-thought-out shutter speeds.
The focus speed won't blow you away (it's not slow, but it's not blazing unrestrainedly either), but I think Nikon got the price / performance balance here right - slightly slower focus and cheaper edifice in exchange for good optics, particularly up to 200mm, and a low price.

Major lens for the money
I genuinely like this lens, aside from the fact that it's got a lot of plastic in it, it's still a very solid lens. My only real kick is that it's not 400 or 500mm. Sharpness seems good at all focal lengths on my D700. This is really your only satisfactory option for an "affordable" full frame 300mm zoom from Nikon. The VR technology works great too. Here's some shots of a red tailed hawk in take to one's heels that I took with this lens on a D700 last year.

Pro blue blood at an affordable price
I will type this short and sweet. This lens is good. One of the best bargains out there. On my D60, it balances sweetly and gives you the feel of a pro. The rubber barrel of the lens is smooth during focusing and auto focus speed is more fast for a f/4.5 lens. The optics is near tack sharp out to 250mm which will travel over your zooming range 95% or more of the time. Although not an indoor lens you can get good pics indoor but my handbook to this lens is the ultra light weight and cheap 35mm f/1.8 ($199) which covers most of my indoor requirements (except sports). With those two lenses you are well covered most of the time. My last purchase hopefully this xmas will be the 105 VR. In any event this lens can be had as low as $390 (sort of used or refurbished - like mine) from eBay (appologies to amazon).

Huge lens
I have had this lens for a duo of months now and it is by far one of my better lenses. I have shot closes up pictures of plants, insects, birds etc... I have it mounted my Nikon D90 and it is perfectly perfect! I very recently bought a sigma 150-500mm telephoto zoom lens, and it should make it tomorrow. I hope it will be as good as this lens maybe even better. For any average to professional photographer, I extremely recommend this lens. The lens will not fit in small camera cases but in medium size cases (what i have) it hysteria snugly. Like i said, the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S Zoom Nikkor lens is professional for photographers average to professional.

A Renowned Add to your Camera Bag
I use this lens more than I use the 18-55mm. This is a well-advised lens for portraits so that you aren't up into somebody's personal business. I was able to take a picture of a flat in the sky, and though I could not zoom in on all the details with the lens, I could crop the image on my d5000 and still print the cropped metaphor at a 18x20. And see the details. I noticed a little noise on completely zoomed in images if they are cropped, but I enjoyment this lens. It does not have VR (vibration reduction) so hold your hand steady, or use a tripod for slower shutter speeds. If you difficulty to go out with your camera and can't lug around your bag of lenses, take this one. It gets the job done. But remember, just because you can zoom way close, this is NOT a macro lens...

Extraordinary Do-It-All Amateur Lens
For those of us who like to excursions, or like to be able to carry one lens, this is perfect for us. I wouldn't even call it an amateur lens, I would say semi-pro, it is not metal, but other than that it shoots serious quality images. Just the ability to go on vacation or anywhere without having to carry multiple lens is a joy, though for us DX shooters, I would bring up picking up a wide angle to fill the void in that area. It is slightly heavy if you are used to having a kit 18-55, 18-105, 55-200 lenses, but you will get in use accustomed to to it quickly and I feel it helps with steadiness and gives a better feel to the camera. As it has been said once upon a time, the only difference between this and the VR version is the added lock which I have not seen mine creep with the lock off so save yourself a few dollars and get the actual.

Heinous Lens!
There's nothing out there that can struggle with this lens! I'm looking towards switching to prime lenses but as far as versatility/quality/price are concerned this is it. 18-200 with VR is fictitious. It's not cheap but as a "single solution" lens you won't find any better. The aperture doesn't go as wide as I'd like but that's what happens when it is a 10x zoom. Can't ask for anything more in an 18-200 lens.

My new example lens.
I've had this lens for a few months now, and my notion is very favorable. It has been great for traveling, capturing lots of once-in-a-lifetime shots. The 18-200mm series makes it pretty easy to capture your subject. I couldn't always say the same for the 18-70mm lens that this replaced.
Whilom before to purchasing, I considered the Sigma equivalent, but found that the image quality wasn't nearly as talented, and the lens itself was much larger. Not an attribute I was seeking in a lens I travel a lot with.

Handy
I purchased this lens as my all around lens. I did not miss to change lens while on vacation and touring around. This lens worked very well on my recent vacation. It worked for sign, wide angle, and in between photos. I was very happy with its performance and the quality of the photos. It is a little awful and the size makes it difficult to put in just any bag when not using it. I must say, I was horrified when I accidently dropped my camera and it landed on the ill at ease of this lens. I did have a filter on the lens, but the filter seemed to take the brunt of the fall and the lens was absolutely dry. Also, because of its size, it did get knocked around a bit, but it held up very well. I have absolutely no complaints. It is simple to use

I bought it because it was less costly than others.
Unfortunately, the auto focus does not work on D5000 which

Also the image shown is not what was shipped.
It has an extra 2 inch rotating black sleeve on the end of it.

Nikons Top Worst Lens!
I am very surprised that Nikon bring up such a poor quality Chinese made lens. This lens will only damage Nikon's good name for quality optics. The only aspect going for it is the low weight. As for optical quality I would like to give it a minus rating due to the awful very faulty optics. You don't even get what you pay for! Avoid at all costs!

Extensive Practical Lens & Great Price
This lens is a top rated lens by Consumer Reports. See their December 2009 affair and the standard zoom lens that they reviewed. With its moderate wide angle to moderate telephoto, it is a large lens to use for a lot of every day situations, particularly those with family and friends. It is lightweight (only about 14 ounces), so it is calm to carry around. The autofocus is very responsive. I love the pictures that I have got with it--bright and clear. All of this at the price for which Amazon sells this lens is a able deal. The only drawback for me on the lens was the lack of image stabilization. Nikon, however, does sell a equivalent lens with a image stabilizer, but it will cost you more.

Throw-away
This is the archetype lens that comes bundled with many entry level kits. It is not a bad lens. The pictures were crumbly and evenly lit. It focused fairly fast when it was new. It is very light, adding little weight to the camera. It is surprisingly dust resistant for a cheap lens. No noticeable dust accumulation inside, even after serious use. For light, full auto use, this lens is probably great. For other uses - not so much. Here are the main problems:
* Tuppence, flimsy construction: the silent wave motor on this lens is a cheap budget print run. The gears are plastic (so is the rest of the lens). They wear out which becomes noticeable by the camera having an increasingly harder era to focus.
* Manual focus is unusable: The lens hes an auto/manual switch, but focusing is done by means of a microscopic ring at the end of the lens which is hopelessly imprecise. (it only moves 1/4 of a turn)
* Filter mount turns when focusing: dismiss from one's mind using polarization filters.
* Fragile: do not apply (any) pressure to the front of the lens. I accidentally snapped the AF implements shaft by placing the camera lens down in a camera case.
If you don't move your camera a lot, this will make a great all-purpose lens. Or use it as a expendable lens for sandy or dusty environments where you would not want to use an expensive lens.

VR is outstrip but this works fine
In the concentrated range that I am using this for I have had no movt/blurr in the pics. Perhaps at low light the VR would help but if you can save some prosperous by using this lense...its fine. I did get an USA 5 year warranty lense and be sure to ask any seller if its a "elderly" market lense or a USA one. Not saying that a sellers warranty is not good, but perhaps, Nikon could be better.

Can I fit my old Nikon lenses onto a new digital camera with or without an adaptor?
Q: The Lenses I have are:
Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D Zoom-Nikkor
Nikon AF 35-70mm f/2.8D
Could they be made to order to a new Nikon digital camera? If so, what models?
Also, would it be possible to somehow use an adapter to put them onto the Cannon Digital Insurrrectionist XT?
Thanks.
A: I currently have occupied my older Nikon AF lenses with success on my D50, D70, and D200 with no trouble. The only exceptions to that full compatibility rule would be the current D40, D40x, or D60, as they inadequacy the internal autofocus motor and must be manually focused.
Truthful now, my long tele of choice is an older Nikon 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Nikkor. There are zero compatibility problems with my in circulation digitals. This is one of Nikon's strong points, as there is a longer history of compatibility than almost any other DSLR maker.

At most a reminder, except for the new D3, with it's full-frame sensor, all other Nikon DSLR's have a 1.5 goods factor, effectively giving your lenses different perspectives in the digital age. Your 70-210mm becomes a 105-315mm and your 35-70mm, becomes a 53-105mm.
As for your last suspect, yes, you can use an adaptor for a "Canon" XT.
Hope this helps.
Are Nikon lenses compatible with every camera?

A: To add to the above-mentioned answer: You could use the oldest lenses on a newer camera IF the lens has been AI'ed. (Vehicle-Index) Mounting a non AI lens on the wrong camera could break the camera mount.
Alternative Nikor lenses for Nikon camera?
Q: I fancy to buy lenses for my Nikon camera, actually a 50 mm one. What are the alternatives to a Nikor lens?
A: These are the only present-day third-party normal primes for F-mount that I'd consider plausible quality:
Cosina Zeiss-label 50mm Planar f/1.4
Cosina Voigtlander-stamp 58mm Nokton f/1.4
Cosina Voigtlander-label 40mm Ultron f/2
These are all manufactured in Japan by Cosina under document, not in Zeiss/Voigtlander factories - they're not really Zeiss/Voigtlander products.
